Nollywood Mourns Again as Actress Atinuke Kareem Dies of Breast Cancer

The Nigerian film industry has suffered another painful loss following the death of actress Atinuke Remilekun Kareem, popularly known as Atinuke Kareem, after a prolonged battle with breast cancer. Her death was announced on Tuesday by the Ogun State Governor of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), Owolabi Ajasa, in a statement shared on his Instagram page. Ajasa expressed appreciation to Nigerians and other well-wishers who supported the actress during her illness, particularly those who contributed financially towards her treatment and offered prayers, encouragement and other forms of assistance. He wrote, “We sincerely appreciate everyone who contributed financially, offered prayers, encouragement, and support towards the treatment of our dear colleague, ATINUKE REMILEKUN KAREEM. “Sadly, despite all our efforts and prayers, Atinuke has passed on and answered the final call. “We cannot question the Almighty God. We can only submit to His will and pray that He grants her eternal rest and gives her family, colleagues, and loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss.” The actress had reportedly been receiving treatment for breast cancer, with colleagues and members of the public rallying support for her during her health challenge. Her death has added to the growing grief within the Nigerian film industry, coming only days after the death of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo. Hassan, who was 66, died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a prolonged battle with stage-four cancer. His death was announced by his daughter, and he was buried the following day, Monday, August 24, according to Islamic rites in his hometown, Ilaro, Ogun State. The deaths of the two actors within days of each other have cast a pall of mourning over Nollywood, with colleagues, friends, fans and other industry stakeholders expressing grief and paying tribute to the deceased. For many in the industry, the loss of Atinuke has also highlighted the emotional and financial challenges faced by practitioners battling serious illnesses, as colleagues and supporters had rallied around her in an effort to aid her treatment. As tributes continue to pour in, members of the Nollywood community are mourning Atinuke Kareem and extending condolences to her family, colleagues and loved ones.
