Street vendors to get marked spaces on Gandhi Bazaar footpaths, pedestrian access to be protected

Bengaluru Central City Corporation has begun marking designated vending zones on Gandhi Bazaar Main Road, allowing street vendors to continue their business while ensuring footpaths remain clear and safe for pedestrians. The Bengaluru Central City Corporation (BCCC) has initiated measures to regulate street vending on Gandhi Bazaar Main Road in Chickpet Division by creating designated vending spaces for hawkers while ensuring pedestrians have unobstructed access to footpaths. A review meeting on the allocation of vending spaces was chaired by BCCC Commissioner Jagadeesh G, during which officials discussed the implementation of the new system. During the meeting, the Commissioner directed officials to strictly implement the directions issued by the High Court. He made it clear that street vendors will be allowed to conduct business only at locations specifically identified and marked on the footpaths. These markings will clearly indicate the spaces where vendors can operate. The objective is to strike a balance between protecting the livelihoods of street vendors and ensuring that pedestrians can walk safely without facing obstructions. By restricting vending activities to designated areas, the civic body aims to keep public spaces organised while maintaining a clear walking corridor on the footpaths. The move is expected to improve pedestrian safety, reduce congestion on footpaths and ensure better management of street vending activities in one of the city’s busy commercial areas. The civic body is expected to continue implementing the marked vending system in accordance with the High Court’s directions while ensuring both vendors and pedestrians benefit from the new arrangement.
