News Alert: Flash Floods Ravage Jammu & Kashmir as Shopping Complex Collapses, Dozens Hit Hard
Severe monsoon rains have unleashed widespread devastation across Jammu and Kashmir, with flash floods causing extensive damage to homes, markets, roads, and public infrastructure. In Budgam’s Beerwah area, the swollen Sukhnag River eroded the foundation of a shopping complex, leading to its dramatic collapse. The incident swept away nearly 24 shops, leaving local traders devastated as years of investment and livelihood were reduced to rubble within moments. Officials, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and district administration, reached the affected areas to assess the situation and supervise ongoing rescue and relief operations. Across the region, relentless rainfall has triggered multiple flash floods and waterlogging incidents. In Pulwama’s Pampore area, floodwaters breached boundary walls and entered residential homes following a cloudburst, while overflowing streams inundated neighborhoods in Baramulla’s Tangmarg, damaging agricultural land and submerging parked vehicles. Ladakh’s Kargil district also witnessed destructive flash floods that washed away roads, homes, and infrastructure, with powerful torrents carrying vehicles, debris, and building materials downstream. Residents were forced to flee as water levels rose rapidly, highlighting the increasing risks posed by extreme weather events in mountainous regions. Authorities continue to monitor vulnerable locations and deploy emergency teams to assist affected communities. The latest spell of heavy rainfall has once again exposed the fragility of infrastructure in flood-prone areas, while residents face mounting losses and uncertainty. Disaster response agencies remain on high alert as weather conditions continue to pose challenges across northern India, with officials urging people living near rivers, streams, and landslide-prone zones to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories.
